Aaronic Priesthood Excitement

One week we went to church (mormon church) in Portland. It just so happened to be the first week one of the boys passed the sacrament. He is mentally challenged in some way. The young men had assigned some other deacon to walk around the chapel with him to make sure he passed the sacrament to the right rows. Well, while he was giving the bread to the Bishop, he turned and looked into the audience to find his parents. He had this huge smile on his face. He was just sooooo excited to finally be old enough to pass the sacrament. Then as he came down from the stand, he was passing to the rows of the congregation and still he would turn and look at his parents. I even caught him waving at them with excitement. It was just so cute and so real. He was uninhibited in showing his true feelings about being a deacon.

As I thought about him, I decided that all the new deacons are just as excited about FINALLY joining the deacons quorum and probably are smiling from ear to ear inside too, but somehow can control their excitement from showing, unlike the boy in your ward.

So it was with Tom today. He has been watching those older boys bless the sacrament for years. And his day finally came today. I was searching for the smile from ear to ear that I knew was in him, but he kept his cool and controlled his emotions. When he was done, he came and sat by us in the pews and looked down the row at me with a huge smile. I knew it!!!!! He really wanted to wave at me from the sacrament table. “Mom look at me, I’m finally here.”
