Technology Talk

I decided to post my talk about the internet and technology as it relates to the Gospel. It isn’t all really spiritual but it is very practical. Here is my talk in outline format.

        1. Pornography, is it really that bad?

Whether it be through the printed page, movies, television, obscene lyrics, the telephone, or on a flickering personal computer screen, pornography is overpoweringly addictive and severely damaging.
              3. iii.      How can a man, particularly a priesthood bearer, not think of the damage emotionally and spiritually caused to women, especially to a wife, from such abhorrent activity? The participation in pornography in any of its lurid forms is a manifestation of unbridled selfishness.

                1. i.      You must not fool around with the Internet to find pornographic material. You must not rent videos with pornography of any kind. This salacious stuff simply is not for you. Stay away from pornography as you would avoid a serious disease. It is as destructive.
                2. ii.      Pornography can be powerfully addicting. Scientific research—including new brain-scan technology—is beginning to show that pornography may cause physical and chemical changes in the brain similar to those caused by drugs. The only sure way to avoid the danger is to stay away from pornography in the first place.
                3. So, do we need to taste cow dung to know that it is bad for you? Well, these men say that pornography is deeply poisonous, avoid like a serious disease. It destroys, its dangerous, overpoweringly addictive, vicious, corroding, destructive deadly, sinister enemy. Does this sound like something you should try?
                4. Now we know it is Corrosive, Damaging and Destructive, how do we stay away from it?
      5. v.      don’t rely on the filter alone; it may fail you. The only real control is self-control.
      6. vi.      What happens when you accidentally get hit with Pornography?
        1. Run away? Turn of the computer?
        2. Here are some tips and tricks on how to get away from pornography.
          1. First, Look Away! For the Strength of Youth
          2. If you encounter pornography, turn away from it immediately
          3. c. ALT F4 Close programs
          4. d. ALT Back Arrow – Take you back to the previous web page.
          5. e. Turn off computer
      7. vii.      The Bible has a story about the internet and Pornography and what to do about it. One is a story of obedience and the other is a story of destruction. You did know that the Bible talked about the internet did you?

          1. “and there was none of the men of the house there within.”
          2. “she caught him by his garment”
          3. Joseph “fled, and got him out” (Gen. 39:12).
            1. i.      In other words, he ran.
            2. Be a modern-day Joseph. Remember what Joseph did when Potiphar’s wife tried to trap him in an immoral situation?
            3. When you are exposed to pornography, leave immediately—whether by a mouse click, a channel change, or a quick exit from a friend’s house.
            4. What did Joseph do when presented with “pornography”? He FLED and got him out!!! ALT F4
            5. SAMUEL CHAPTER 11
              1. KING DAVID
              2. 2 And it came to pass in an evening tide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
              3. We all know what happened to David, he fell from the grace of God.
    5. Parental awareness and Tools
      1. Put the computer in a room that the whole family uses.
      2. Take time to learn how to use the Internet yourself
      3. Implement Family Rules
    6. b. Install a filtering Program
      1. a. Filtering Will track what sites were visited
        1. i. Limits access to the internet through time restrictions and passwords
        2. ii. Blocks content that is objectionable
        3. iii. Examples of Filtering Software Ranging from $40-$60

      2. b. Self-discipline is always the most effective protection.
      3. c. Help children apply righteous standards for judging what is good and what isn’t.
    7. Instant Messages and Chat Rooms
      1. Impossible to trace without technical knowledge.
      2. Content is not tracked and language is not filtered.
      3. Users are Anonymous
      4. Anonymity brings out the worst in many people
      5. Predators can easily present themselves as regular people
      6. Never display or discuss REAL personal Information
      7. Personal information can be used maliciously
      8. Only chat with people you already know
      9. ”Trolls” and” Wolves” flame users with filthy messages
      10. Someone jumps into a chat rooms, Posts about bunch of horrible words and leaves quickly.
      11. Images, Files and Music can be exchanged that can be malicious
    8. FaceBook , My Space
      1. Parents, get a facebook page
      2. Get involved in facebook
      3. Only add Real Life Friends
      4. Do not click on links that look suspicious.
  3. Texting
    1. Not all Bad – when was the first text message?
      1. i.      Lehi and the Liahona
        1. 1st Nephi 16:27-29
          1. 27 And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were awritten upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives.

And thus we see that by bsmall means the Lord can bring about great things.
    2. There is definitely a time for listening to music, texting, and talking, but there is also a time for simply listening for things of the Spirit.
    3. Bad:
      1. i.      remain detached from people (Video)
      2. ii.      texting their friends during Sunday School or seminary lessons
      3. iii.      people being hurt by the content of a message received
      4. iv.      Sending Pictures
        1. Don’t ever send bad pictures of yourself
        2. Picture can be forwarded to email, youtube, phones etc.
        3. If you receive a questionable picture, delete it immediately.
        4. Federal law (18 U.S.C. §1466A) also criminalizes knowingly producing, distributing, receiving, or possessing with intent to distribute, a visual depiction of any kind, including a drawing, cartoon, sculpture or painting
    4. Guidelines
      1. i.      Learn when to use texting appropriately and in moderation
      2. ii.      Learn how to start a conversation with someone you don’t know.
      3. iii.      Missionaries come back from missions talking about
      4. iv.      Do not send out a text that you wouldn’t say in person
      5. v.      Parents monitor texting amounts
  4. Video Games
    1. Start to make rules and guidelines for video games
    2. Learn the Ratings: C, E, E10, T, M, AO
      1. i.      Child
      2. ii.      Everyone
      3. iii.      Everyone 10 – up
      4. iv.      Teen
      5. v.      Mature
      6. vi.      Adults Only
    3. Playing violent video games leads to more aggressive thoughts and behavior.
    4. Playing video games for long periods of time hurts academic performance.
    5. Playing video games excessively can hinder or damage children’s and teens’ brain development.
    6. Play games that make you think.
    7. Play games with others who share your values.
    8. Limit game playing to a reasonable amount of time. Set an alarm to remind you of when you had planned on stopping.
    9. Use video games as well-earned recreation, not as an escape from things you are supposed to be doing.
    10. If a game makes you feel bad or think bad thoughts, that’s a good sign it is keeping you from feeling the Holy Spirit. Get rid of that game!

    3. Build each other up, encourange High Standards and support those that keep them high.
    4. There is safety in numbers, stay together, make good decisions together.

Parents Text Kids

I just found this great article about texting. It is from a blog called LDS Media Talk. It talks about the positives that can be found in texting, especially with your own kids. You probably read my post about texting, well, this article just shows that “texting” can be a positive in your family if it is controlled. I guess it is like anything in life, there can be good things but if it is taken to an extreme, can be bad.

The article also goes into some facebook do’s and don’t’s. Enjoy.
