Brownsea Camporee
Last weekend my son and I went on a campout with out his Troop. This was not a normal camp out, it was a Camporee. A Camporee is a camp that is organized and carried out by the District. The Falls District in the Snake River Council to be exact. We camped at a nice little place called Frenchman’s Island near Burley.
The boys setup camp Friday night and then attended a campfire program. While they were at the campfire, I decided to hang back and try my hand at cooking rolls in my dutch oven. I had planned ahead by making some dough in my breadmaker. After burning the bottom of my first batch, I decided to put more coals on the top of my dutch oven to hopefull cook from the top down. This worked a little better but I still need to do a little fine tuning to get it right.
After the scouts returned, cooked some hotdogs, ate a few rolls, they were off to their tents.
In the morning, we were off to learn some skills from a bunch of volunteers from the Council. They learned about knots, lashings, wildlife, campsites, building latrines, and staffs. As I listened to some of the instruction, I thought to myself how important some of this training was. Where else would these young men get this training? They wouldn’t learn it in school, nor at home. Thanksfully, the LDS church uses the Boy Scout Program as the activity arm of the priesthood. The Aaronic Priesthood teaches gospel principles to these boys and the Boy Scouts provides the activities in which to put them in practice. By learning about how to keep a campsite clean and how to build latrine, Andy was able to pass off one of his Duty to God requirements. The two programs go hand in hand.
Eagle Project
I heard a great story in church today about Coby’s eagle project. I wrote a blog post a while ago about his eagle project just in case you want to read more about what he did. In general, his project was organized to hand out a free copy of a web filter to anyone in our Stake. He burned 100 copies of this filter and handed them out at different wards in our stake. The filter is called K9 web filter. This all happened probably a year and a half ago.
So, today my friend came up to me and told me that when he left from church after hearing about the free web filter, he picked up a copy. He wasn’t sure if he would ever use it but he took it home and he put in a drawer. Several months later he was surfing around the internet and came across a bad website which caused many other website to pop up on his screen. He was appalled. He remembered Coby’s Eagle project and dug through his drawer for the CD. He found the CD, installed it, and said that he hasn’t had a problem since.
What a great success story for an Eagle Project that finished over a year ago. Great Job Coby!
On My Honor
I posted something a while ago on my personal blog about putting pictures, images, statements, quotes and things like that in our LDS Church rooms dedicated to the Aaronic Priesthood. I have not put anything in the “Aaronic Priesthood” room for quite a while so I put this together quickly on Monday in hopes that I can pin it up in the room this Sunday. I know it isn’t really about the priesthood, it is more geared towards the scouting program but the principles go hand in hand.
If you don’t already know, this is part of the Scout Oath which reads, “On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty, to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; to keep my self physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” I figured that I put in enough items to bring that oath into their minds.
