1. Introduction

Clint Carter Twin Falls Idaho, BYU, Secretary in the SYMP, YM President, Deacons Quorum Advisor

Times have changed

i. Can’t reject or remove technology

ii. Embrace technology and setup rules and boundaries

2. Internet

Do’s of the Internet

i. Use Search Engines when finding information
Filters Search

Don’ts of the Internet

i. Don’t type in URL you don’t know

ii. Don’t Browse sites with illegal content

iii. Don’t Open e-mail you don’t recognize

iv. Don’t give our address or phone to strangers

v. Don’t give out personal information in Chat Rooms

vi. Only buy from reliable sources on the Internet.

vii. Never agree to meet or telephone someone without parental permission

viii. Recognize that people online may not be who they say they are.

c. Good

i. LDS.ORG

ii. Family History Site

iii. Watch Conference over the web

iv. Missionary work (LDSFamily.net)

Bad

i. Hate Groups

ii. Chat Rooms (good and bad)

iii. Deception

iv. Pornography

Pornography, is it really that bad?

Cow Dung Principal

Do you need to taste cow dung to know that it is really bad for you?

Here are some very intelligent and spiritual people commenting about Pornography

Elder David E. Sorensen

i. You Can’t Pet a Rattlesnake

ii. “Pornography, though billed by Satan as entertainment, is a deeply poisonous, deceptive snake that lies coiled up in magazines, the Internet, and the television. Pornography destroys self-esteem and weakens self-discipline.

Elder Richard G. Scott

i. The Sanctity of Womanhood

ii. One of the most damning influences on earth, one that has caused uncountable grief, suffering, heartache, and destroyed marriages is the onslaught of pornography in all of its vicious, corroding, destructive forms. Whether it be through the printed page, movies, television, obscene lyrics, the telephone, or on a flickering personal computer screen, pornography is overpoweringly addictive and severely damaging.

iii. How can a man, particularly a priesthood bearer, not think of the damage emotionally and spiritually caused to women, especially to a wife, from such abhorrent activity? The participation in pornography in any of its lurid forms is a manifestation of unbridled selfishness.

Gordon B. Hinkley

i. You must not fool around with the Internet to find pornographic material. You must not rent videos with pornography of any kind. This salacious stuff simply is not for you. Stay away from pornography as you would avoid a serious disease. It is as destructive.

ii. Pornography can be powerfully addicting. Scientific research—including new brain-scan technology—is beginning to show that pornography may cause physical and chemical changes in the brain similar to those caused by drugs. The only sure way to avoid the danger is to stay away from pornography in the first place.

So, do we need to taste cow dung to know that it is bad for you? Well, these men say that pornography is deeply poisonous, avoid like a serious disease. It destroys, its dangerous, overpoweringly addictive, vicious, corroding, destructive deadly, sinister enemy. Does this sound like something you should try?

Now we know it is Corrosive, Damaging and Destructive, how do we stay away from it?

v. don’t rely on the filter alone; it may fail you. The only real control is self-control.

vi. What happens when you accidentally get hit with Pornography?

Run away? Turn of the computer?

Here are some tips and tricks on how to get away from pornography.

First, Look Away! For the Strength of Youth

If you encounter pornography, turn away from it immediately

c. ALT F4 Close programs

d. ALT Back Arrow – Take you back to the previous web page.

e. Turn off computer

vii. The Bible has a story about the internet and Pornography and what to do about it. One is a story of obedience and the other is a story of destruction. You did know that the Bible talked about the internet did you?

GENESIS CHAPTER 39

“and there was none of the men of the house there within.”

“she caught him by his garment”

Joseph “fled, and got him out” (Gen. 39:12).

i. In other words, he ran.

Be a modern-day Joseph. Remember what Joseph did when Potiphar’s wife tried to trap him in an immoral situation?

When you are exposed to pornography, leave immediately—whether by a mouse click, a channel change, or a quick exit from a friend’s house.

What did Joseph do when presented with “pornography”? He FLED and got him out!!! ALT F4

SAMUEL CHAPTER 11

KING DAVID

2 And it came to pass in an evening tide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

We all know what happened to David, he fell from the grace of God.

Texting

Not all Bad – when was the first text message?

i. Lehi and the Liahona

1st Nephi 16:27-29

27 And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were awritten upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives.

28 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the afaith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them.

29 And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us aunderstanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by bsmall means the Lord can bring about great things.

There is definitely a time for listening to music, texting, and talking, but there is also a time for simply listening for things of the Spirit.

Bad:

i. remain detached from people (Video)

ii. texting their friends during Sunday School or seminary lessons

iii. people being hurt by the content of a message received

iv. Sending Pictures

Don’t ever send bad pictures of yourself

Picture can be forwarded to email, youtube, phones etc.

If you receive a questionable picture, delete it immediately.

Federal law (18 U.S.C. §1466A) also criminalizes knowingly producing, distributing, receiving, or possessing with intent to distribute, a visual depiction of any kind, including a drawing, cartoon, sculpture or painting

Guidelines

i. Learn when to use texting appropriately and in moderation

ii. Learn how to start a conversation with someone you don’t know.

iii. Missionaries come back from missions talking about

iv. Do not send out a text that you wouldn’t say in person

v. Parents monitor texting amounts

Video Games

Start to make rules and guidelines for video games

Learn the Ratings: C, E, E10, T, M, AO

i. Child

ii. Everyone

iii. Everyone 10 – up

iv. Teen

v. Mature

vi. Adults Only

Playing violent video games leads to more aggressive thoughts and behavior.

Playing video games for long periods of time hurts academic performance.

Playing video games excessively can hinder or damage children’s and teens’ brain development.

Play games that make you think.

Play games with others who share your values.

Limit game playing to a reasonable amount of time. Set an alarm to remind you of when you had planned on stopping.

Use video games as well-earned recreation, not as an escape from things you are supposed to be doing.

If a game makes you feel bad or think bad thoughts, that’s a good sign it is keeping you from feeling the Holy Spirit. Get rid of that game!

I just found this great article about texting. It talks about the positives that can be found in texting, especially with your own kids. You probably read my post about texting, well, this article just shows that “texting” can be a positive in your family if it is controlled. I guess it is like anything in life, there can be good things but if it is taken to an extreme, can be bad.

The article also goes into some facebook do’s and don’t’s. Enjoy.

As I was visiting one of my business clients in Malta Idaho the other day, I was asked to step into an office and talk for a minute. I found out that the gentleman in the office was the Bishop of his LDS ward. We chatted for a few minutes and then he asked if I would be willing to come to his Ward and give a talk about cell phones, computers and the internet. I have given a similar talk many times to many different groups. Each times I have talked about computers, internet, pornography etc. However, I haven’t had to talk about cell phones before. Apparently, there is a huge problem with people taking pictures and sending them in text form to other people. (commonly known as texting) Young people especially don’t seem to understand the implications of taking a picture of themselves and sending it to a friend. It is called sexting. I don’t have texting on my phone, (we have it blocked on our phones) so I don’t have a ton of experience with the issue so I’m going to have to do a little bit of research. I did post an article a while ago about a friend of mine that does a lot of texting. Here is that post.

texting

I have a month to prepare so wish me luck.

In my short research I found an article on the web that talked about a young man that had received a picture from his girl friend. This is what the article said,

“The Sentinel tells the story of Phillip Alpert. After his former girlfriend taunted him, Alpert remembered the nude photos she e-mailed to him while they were dating. He took revenge by e-mailing the photos of the 16-year-old girl to more than 70 people, including her parents, grandparents and teachers. Three days later, Alpert, then 18, was charged with transmitting child pornography. Today, Alpert is serving five years of probation for the crime, and he is registered as a sex offender — a label he must carry at least until he is 43.”

This is a very dangerous practice that can mark you for life. I think my message will be, “DO NOT FORWARD SEXTING MESSAGES AND BLOCK THOSE THAT SEND THEM TO YOU!”
